Police dogs and a trail of confectionery left behind after the burglary of a school canteen led Blenheim police to the house where the culprits were staying.
Ryan Graham Stretch, 18, unemployed of Blenheim, and Karl Brian Shirley-McKay, 19, a butcher of Blenheim, appeared in the Blenheim District Court yesterday and admitted the burglary.
They will be sentenced on March 14.
Stretch also admitted breaching community work.
The third co-accused, Alousha Kirill Taylor, 18, unemployed of Koromiko, did not enter a plea and will reappear on February 28.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Graham Single said the group were drinking at a Scott St home about 2.30am on January 4, and talked about going to the Marlborough Boys' College canteen. A large pole was used to smash a window at the canteen so they could get inside.
One of the group climbed inside and took confectionery and food, at which point an alarm sounded. The group ran back to the Scott St house, leaving behind a trail of their loot, Mr Single said.
Reparation of $320 is sought for the damage.
Judge Bruce Davidson called for pre-sentence reports for Stretch and Shirley-McKay to look at the possibility of community detention.
