Prime
Minister John Key says new data from the Education Ministry about
national standards shows an increase in achievement, especially among
Pasifika students.
The data, which will be
released by the Education Minister Hekia Parata today, builds a "good
picture" of the education system and "allows us to better target our
resources and helps identify those children who are in danger of falling
behind", Mr Key said at a press conference yesterday.
Mr
Key said the data shows an increase in achievement in Years 1-8, but he
did not give an indication as to how large the increase in achievement
was.
"This is great news, but we can always do
better. Too many children are being left behind and leaving school
without the most basic of skills."
An average
of four of five children were leaving school with the qualifications
they need, but the Government wanted all children to be at that level,
he said.
The national aggregate data for
reading, writing and maths is for the second full year of national
standards in primary and intermediate schools across the country.
