A simple blue fish above a stormwater drain outside Springlands School holds a serious message – everything that goes down the drain goes directly into Marlborough's waterways.
Placing the symbol above the drain topped off an eight-month project by room 18 which started in term two with the school science focus on water.
Springlands School teacher Cathee Wilks said her class went on a field trip to the Taylor River and were shocked at how few insects and other creatures they found near the waterway.
The pupils started the fish on drains project after their research found people did not know where water from the stormwater drains ended up.
Representatives from Whitney Street School and Redwoodtown School as well as Mayor Alistair Sowman were also at the ceremony on Friday.
Whitney Street School principal Alan Straker said the school had planned a water unit next year and a similar project would be a good focus for one of the classes.
A hundred fish made of coloured plastic have been donated to place above drains around Springlands to remind people where their water ends up.
