Bad start to 2011 for drink-driver

The new year did not start well for an 18-year-old Blenheim man who drove into a Napier school while drunk early on New Year's Day.

Connor Tamatea Sami Douglas was sentenced to 50 hours' community work and disqualified for seven months after he admitted drink driving and driving dangerously.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Graham Single said Douglas was travelling about 100kmh in a 50kmh zone on Carnell St, Napier, about 3.30am on January 1.

Douglas did not realise he was approaching a T-junction and drove into Napier Intermediate School on Jull St, gouging the tarmac with the car's undercarriage.

The car went over a flowerbed and into a 1.8-metre storm fence which was around a large mound of dirt, causing the airbags to deploy.

The passenger fled the scene but was later found by police.

Douglas was uninjured in the driver's seat.

He was found to have 839 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

The legal limit is 400mcg.

Douglas told police he had driven from Auckland and drunk two beers. Defence counsel Tane Brunt said Douglas had no other convictions.
